Achievement for All
New Qualification Courses Launched at Calvert Trust Exmoor
Visitors to Calvert Trust Exmoor can now gain watersports qualifications. People with disabilities can take their RYA Levels 1 and 2 in sailing and their BCU 1 star in kayaking.
These qualifications are awarded by national sport governing bodies. Calvert Trust Exmoor is ensuring that people with disabilities can engage in these courses and improve their watersports skills.
Enabling people with disabilities to undertake such courses frequently demands specialist equipment. On our jetty at Wistlandpound reservoir, we have a fixed hoist to safely allow guests to be lifted out of their wheelchairs and into their boats. We use the indoor swimming pool for teaching basic skills, where we have a similar hoist. We also have access dinghies that enable visitors with limited ability to sail.
These new courses will teach guests how to sail and kayak. The courses build confidence as well as skills, as Activities Manager Oliver Jenkins explains:
"These courses give a huge sense of achievement to people that need the boost. Many guests discover a new sport that they will then keep up. Many more enjoy the feeling of freedom that such sports offer."
